In one of the Falcons’ last games of the season, nearly every player on the roster got time on the field — and outfielder Hannah Dewey and catcher Valentina Perrone were even able to step on the mound and throw a few pitches for their first time ever in a varsity game.
Torrey Pines dominated against Canyon Crest 13-1 on their home field, taking an early lead and ending the game at five innings.
In the top of the fourth, the Falcons were comfortably ahead 10-1. Many of the team’s starters were subbed out or moved around on the field to give the other players some live action and foster a sense of team unity. Newly subbed in at third base, Sherrie Antoun made all three outs in the fourth inning, first catching a pop-up foul ball, and then fielding two grounders and throwing to first base.
“Ally Joas pitched for four innings and did a good job, [and] Valentina got a strikeout and then a pop out,” head coach Jonathan Moore said. “It’s nice seeing the first unit cheer like crazy for the second unit, because the second unit doesn’t get to play very much, so that was fun for everybody.”
After the changeover in the fourth inning, Kristin Bitter hit a home run deep over the fence in left field. Two more runs from solid hits and a handful of walks gave the Falcons their final score.
The first inning gave Torrey Pines the strong start they needed for swift victory. Stavi Augur, Sydny Poh and Haley White all hit line drives to center field to put runners on base and around to score. Alex Reges stole home after Canyon Crest's catcher was unable to stop a tough pitch.
On Thursday, the Falcons will be competing against rival La Costa Canyon at home for the 2017 Avocado West league title. The two teams last played on April 25 with the Mavericks taking the victory 5-2, but Moore said that his players are “much better than when [they] played” at La Costa and is anticipating an exciting and emotional day.
“First of all, it’s Senior Day, so it’ll be a little emotional,” Moore said. “We start five seniors, and we’re going to start [all] six that day because we’re going to have Sherrie be the designated hitter … I’m excited for our seniors, and I’m excited we could win the league championship on senior day on our home field.”
Thursday’s game against the Mavericks will be both teams’ final game of the season before CIF playoffs begin.
