PORTLAND – Although Wilson is still searching for its first win after a 27-10 loss to visiting Cleveland Friday night, the Trojans left the field with optimism.
“We knew it was going to be a close game,” Wilson assistant coach Aaron Olsen said. “We spent a lot of time reviewing tapes and preparing ourselves. Overall, it was a pretty evenly matched game.”
After starting the season with three non-competitive losses in which they were outscored 175-6, the Trojans (0-4, 0-2 6-A) kept it much tighter against the visiting Warriors (2-2, 1-1), who were themselves coming off a pair of one-sided shutout losses.
“There were glimpses of success during the game. I think we did all right,” said Wilson senior quarterback Matthew Jacobsen. “We did a nice job passing the ball in the perimeter, but running the middle needs work. So does our hustle.”
Cleveland opened the scoring with a touchdown with 3:01 left in the first quarter to make it 6-0. After a 23-yard field goal by Wilson freshman kicker Jack White early in the second quarter, Cleveland extended the lead to 13-3 with a touchdown midway through the third quarter.
The Warriors broke the game open early in the fourth quarter with a pair of touchdowns 33 seconds apart, the second coming on an interception return to make it 27-3. Wilson scored a touchdown late for the final margin of 27-10.
“Next time we just need to keep the team chemistry going and building up our defense will help a lot,” said Wilson senior cornerback Alexander Taff.
