FREMONT, CA – The American Eagles football team scored on its first drive and never trailed in a 40-22 win over visiting Irvington Friday night in a Mission Valley League game.
Treyvon Jones led the Eagles (4-2, 1-1 Mission Valley) with three rushing touchdowns, including a three-yard score on American's first drive. The Eagles increased their lead over the Vikings (3-3, 2-1) to 27-14 on an option pass from Deangelo Cox to Anthony Wellington on the final play of the first half.
Coming off a tough loss against Washington the previous week, American was able to get back on top of its game.
“It feels great. We were working hard this week, harder than last week after our tough game," American quarterback Ryan Barker said. "We just came out with high hopes for today’s game.”
American also dominated defensively sacking Irvington’s quarterback and forcing a fumble. The fumble recovery would lead to a touchdown for the Eagles, giving them a 40-14 lead late in the fourth quarter.
“After a game like this you look like you need work on both side of the ball, but most of it is just reading your keys on defense and hitting your assignments," Irvington coach Zachary Silvernale said. "We had more mental breakdowns in this game then we usually do. This is a very good team, and I think we learned this week when we aren’t in it mentally that we can be beat. I think that’s an important thing for them to learn.”
American looks to make it two in a row next week at Mission San Jose. Irvington hosts Kennedy.
