Mountain View uses huge first half to rout Lynbrook

November 4, 2017

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - Friday night, Mountain View bounced back after its 35-0 loss against rival Los Altos and routed Lynbrook, 42-0.

“It was a complete game," said Mountain View coach Shelley Smith. "The way they responded after the game last week makes me very proud of them.”

The Spartans (4-5) wasted no time getting their offense going as they scored on all five of their possessions in the first half. In addition, the defense also shined, forcing Lynbrook to punt or have a turnover on downs in every first half possession.

Junior Danny Olsen got the scoring started with a four-yard touchdown run. The next time the Spartans had the ball, senior Sam Gil scored on a three-yard rush. The following drive was catapulted by a big reception as junior quarterback JD Coyne found fellow junior Ethan Starr for a 44-yard reception.

Olsen then followed by punching in another touchdown. Gil then also scored again on the next drive from a huge 23-yard run and the rout was on.

The Spartans dominated on offense throughout the entire game. They used a dual quarterback threat, splitting time between Coyne and sophomore Andrew Bice.

“Some of our younger players stepped up and both of our quarterbacks had good days throwing,” Smith added.

Coyne completed 5 of 8 attempts for 101 yards, while Bice completed 2 of 3 passes for 37 yards. Mountain View’s running backs, who Smith said was “their bread and butter”, tortured the Vikings' defense the whole game.

They were led by Gil, who rushed for 79 yards and two touchdowns and Olsen who also rushed for two touchdowns with 63 yards. The other two touchdowns were scored on short runs by senior Michael Capote and sophomore Jose Bautista.

Overall, the Spartans’ defense was the main story as they suffocated Lynbrook’s offense the entire game. Mountain View ended with three sacks and one fumble recovery. Although these stats aren’t eye popping, the Spartans were continuously pressuring Lynbrook’s junior quarterback Nadir Bouaricha and forced him out of the pocket on almost every pass. In total, the Mountain View defense limited Bouaricha to only five completions out of 20 attempts.

“We were aggressive and got after it," Smith said. "Last week we were a little bit too cautious, but this week we took the attack to them.”

Leading the way for the Mountain View defense was junior Victor Baird, who had eight total tackles and a sack, and senior Ozzy Ortiz-Verdi, who had five total tackles.

Mountain View’s spectacular offensive and defensive game was well timed, as they celebrated Senior Night and honored all 18 senior players on the team.

"I loved the way we performed, especially on senior night," Smith concluded.

Next Friday, Mountain View will look to even their record to .500 while playing at Gunn. This was the last game for Lynbrook this season, so they will end with a record of 0-10 and 0-6 in league.
