Petaluma scores early and often in win over Elsie Allen

January 27, 2018

PETALUMA, CA - Petaluma’s boys basketball team started fast and furious Wednesday night as they took down Elsie Allen-SR, 65-40.

Three point shooting was on for the Trojans (11-5, 5-2 SCL). Robbie Isetta began the game with a three, and Jack Anderson followed. José Jiménez and Elias Valasquez were able to shake loose for a pair of buckets, but Devin Gottschall and Justin Wolbert kept the three point tirade going for Petaluma, as they closed the period on an 8-0 run. The Trojans led 22-8 after one.

“This was a good win for us because we were able to take care of business,” said Petaluma head coach Scott Behrs.

Anderson, with seven points already, bullied his way inside for four more via the post up. An and-one netted him a free throw, as he had 12 quick first half points. Kenny Alexander hit a jumper from the corner, and Gottschall continued a good night getting inside. Valasquez for Elsie Allen was fighting inside against bigger defenders, scoring six points. Nik Burns was held in check, but was able to get to the charity stripe. Elsie Allen-SR (5-16, 1-6) trailed 39-18.

More three pointers by Petaluma as Isetta, Wolbert, and Brendan O’Neill all hit from beyond the arc. Isiah Garza took over in the third period for the Lobos, scoring six of their nine points. Petaluma turned it up on the defensive end, coming up with seven steals in the period, leading 51-27 heading into the final stanza.

Alexander dropped in four more points for Petaluma, as they built their lead. Burns was able to get inside at will, scoring six more points to get a team high 11 points. George Tynes leaped for four rebounds in the fourth quarter. He got inside to get four points to the delight of the cozy Petaluma students, in a pajama themed game. Garrett Gehring was able to get on the board, and it seemed like everyone contributed for the Trojans.

“I was happy with all of our guys. Zack Clark and Robert Holmes did a good job taking care of the ball and giving us good minutes.” Said Behrs.

Petaluma, with Healdsburg falling to Sonoma, now sits just a game back in the SCL race, will travel to El Molino-Forestville on Friday night.

Elsie Allen will host Sonoma Valley on Friday.
