WALNUT CREEK - The Northgate Broncos defeated San Marin, 18-4, in a dominating performance on Tuesday night.
Northgate gained control of the game early, going up 3-0 in the first quarter with two goals by attacker Jason Madden and one by midfielder Zach Lentz. Both Madden and Lentz were effective throughout the entire game, scoring five and four goals respectively.
“He (Lentz) is always top energy… he’s a senior, he’s going to be playing at Dominican College next year and he could be a starter at every position but he starts at middie for us,” said Broncos head coach Mike Escobar.
The Broncos surged to a 9-1 lead at the half. San Marin’s one goal came from sophomore Noah Taylor, who would eventually be the Mustangs' top scorer with two goals overall.
“We need to get a little more aggressive. We pass the ball decently. We setup our offense but we didn't really push them very hard," said San Marin coach Max Huff. "We stayed out too much, we’ve got to get a little more aggressive. On defense we’re going to have to start stopping more people, we have a new goalie who has never played before.”
Going into the second half, the Broncos’ stickhandling proved to be superior. They controlled goundballs and face-offs throughout the game. Northgate had balanced scoring with seven different players hitting the back of the net.
The victory gives the Broncos their first win of the season. The Mustangs fell to 1-2-1 on the year.
Next, Northgate will take on rival College Park away from home on Friday, March 2nd at 7:00 pm. San Marin will play at San Rafael High School on March 14th at 4:00 pm.
