UNION CITY — Even three weeks in, James Logan head coach Ricky Rodriguez still didn’t have a solid answer as to what type of team he was coaching.
But with Logan hosting the Honor Bowl, it was fitting that in the middle match of the card, the Colts came out victorious 48-7 in a lopsided game versus Heritage.
“After the first two weeks, we didn’t really know what kind of program or team we had at the varsity level,” Rodriguez said. “But tonight we came out and put everything together offensive and defensively. I liked how our passing game started to come around. We were very one dimensional the first two games of the year.”
The game was showcased by Logan running back Chase Sims, who had five rushing touchdowns.
The Colts started firing out of the gates. In its first drive, Logan went 74 yards, finishing with a five-yard touchdown from Sims, the first of many. In two more consecutive drives, Logan finished them with rushing touchdowns. Sims added another while Shamoun Duncan-Niusulu scored on a keeper.
Sims added another five-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for Logan to make it 28-0.
Heritage had its best drive of the game before the half ended. With senior Trevor Moorman making his first appearance of the season at quarterback, he used his mobility to move the Patriots up the field. After just being short of scoring on a keeper, Hanai Muhammad pounded into the end zone for Heritage, making it 28-7 at halftime.
Sims continued to dominate in the second half, scoring two more touchdowns, including a long one from 47 yards out. He finished the night with 177 yards.
“A lot of these kids use the term slept on, but if there is a kid that truly isn’t getting recognized for his talent, it's Chase Sims,” added Rodriguez.
James Logan now prepares to face non-league rival San Leandro (2-1) in a renewal of the Battle of 880. Heritage must shake off the loss and head on the road to face Amador Valley (2-1) on Friday night. The Dons lost to Campolindo in the first game of the three-game set at the Honor Bowl on Saturday.
