Freshman, balanced attack big on St. Patrick-St. Vincent Senior Night

January 31, 2020

VALLEJO, CA – University of Washington-bound Tameiya Sadler and four other St. Patrick-St. Vincent seniors were honored before the Bruins’ TCAL match up with Bethel. Three of them had key performances, but plucky freshman Ariana Bides, who entered the game scoring under two points a game, had a surprise effort with 12 to top the team as St. Patrick-St. Vincent downed the Jaguars, 48-31.

Sadler was held to eight points – well below her nearly-20-point average – due to foul trouble. She picked up two charges within the first 2:43 and sat out all of the third and most of the second. While she watched from the sidelines, Bides and the rest of the team steered St. Patrick-St. Vincent (14-8, 4-3 TCAL) to a double-digit lead they’d never relent.

Haiden McMahon drained a trio of three-pointers and finished with 11, and Kayla Revelo added eight points and five rebounds for the Bruins. Bethel (15-7, 3-5 TCAL) remained close in the first quarter but the lead ballooned to 14 at the half and though the Jaguars were within shouting distance for the remainder it never really felt they had much of a chance, thanks in part to a fervent crowd which showed up in spades to send off their seniors.

Bethel’s Nikkea Youngblood showed why she’s a player to watch in this conference. The 5’11” sophomore scored 17 points and corralled 14 rebounds, with a couple of steals and blocks to boot.

Many eyes were on Sadler, as in a play in the fourth when she charged up the court and beat several defenders by herself and kissed in a pretty layup. Also, in her limited time (about half of the game) she tallied six rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal. The Bruins’ point guard has been nothing short of a revelation. For her career she’s averaged 13.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists, 5.7 steals, and 1.6 blocks per game.

She was the Vallejo Times-Herald Female Athlete of the Year in 2018-19, a season which saw the Bruins upset Salesian in the Tri-County Athletic League tournament championship game then capture the NCS Division IV crown. To date she’s helped lead the Bruins to 79 wins against 33 losses.

“I’m surprised it went by so fast,” Sadler said of her four years at SPSV. “Just to see how much I’ve grown is the best thing.”

“(Sadler and Revelo) for sure came at the perfect time,” St. Patrick-St. Vincent coach Nadine Walker stated. “To have (Sarah Garcia and McMahon) come back to the program (after sitting out last year) is special for me because it made me feel like they missed something and wanted to be a part of something. The sacrifice that all five of them made to be part of this group, that’s what makes it special.”
