January 16, 2016

NAPA,CA - Monticello Empire League play began Friday night with a game between Napa and Wood. The Indians got the win by a score of 48-37.

Napa (7-9 overall, 1-0 MEL) led 14-8 after a quarter, 27-18 at break, and 38-27 after three periods. The Indians also had a new demeanor as all their players were in uniform and ready to play for the first time all season long.

“It feels great.” Napa coach Darci Ward said of their first win in their last four games. “We have a goal to win league, and now we play how we’ve been practicing.”

Leading the way for the Indians were Alexa Blunt who had 12 points, on 3 of 5 shooting from the field along with four rebounds and two assists. Also adding to the Napa cause was Riley Pridmore who had nine points, one assist, three rebounds and six steals. Taylor Moss added eight and Malia Blackmon seven.

“Riley (Pridmore) was really active defensively and offensively.” Ward added of the senior. “She was very prepared to come play.”

Devon Lewis led the way for the Wildcats (7-8, 0-1) with 16 points, while Jazmin Jackson added 10.

“She’s a terrific point guard.” said Wood coach Bob Fernandez of his freshman point guard. “She’s been that type of player or better for us all year.”

Napa next travels to Rodriguez-Fairfield Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip off.

“Rodriguez is always good; they’re always one of the top teams in the MEL.” added Ward. “They’re always an aggressive well coached team.”

Wood next plays South San Francisco at 4 p.m. Monday in the MLK Shootout, before continuing league play Tuesday in Napa again, this time against Vintage at 7 p.m.

“I think it’ll be another tough game.” Fernandez said. “I think for the most part the league is very very even.”

Ward said it was nice to have a full team finally.

“Tonight was the first time all year we’ve had every single player back and it makes a huge difference.” Ward said.
