Milpitas dominates Silver Creek, 56-7, in D-I playoffs

November 17, 2012

Last Friday night began with a drizzle that turned into a downpour in Milpitas, as the top-seeded Trojans buried visiting Silver Creek, 56-7, in the first round of the CCS Division I playoffs. The win earns Milpitas (8-3) a semifinal date with fifth-seeded Sequoia, which upset Menlo-Atherton 27-7 Friday night. The season ended for the eighth-seeded Raiders (5-6), which was participating in the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

“It was a good win for us,” said Milpitas coach Kelly King, “We really played as a team. Now we will get back to work, look over game film, and just work on our fundamentals for next week.”

The first seven minutes of the game saw just a single touchdown by the Trojans - a 17-yard run by C.J. Reyes - but with five minutes remaining in the first, they began pouring it on. A quick touchdown pass from Ronnie Reed to wide receiver Anthony Chu, followed immediately by a 38-yard interception return by Tre Hartley put Milpitas up 21-0 by the end of the first.

That set the tone for the rest of the game as the Trojans showed whey they are the number one seed and favorite by most to win the Division I title. The game was an almost perfect performance by the Trojans, who committed only one turnover while forcing the ball out of Silver Creek’s possession four times.

Without a doubt one of the most relied on playmakers for Milpitas was Chu, who hauled in not one but two touchdown receptions on the night. Chu’s massive size and speed make him a versatile weapon and a huge asset for Milpitas moving forward in the playoffs.

The Trojan defense effectively shut Silver Creek down, keeping the Raiders out of the end zone until they finally broke the plane on a quarterback sneak with less than 15 seconds remaining in the game to avoid the shutout.
