Prospect defeated host Live Oak, 2-1, in a BVAL-Santa Teresa boys soccer match Monday afternoon.
“You never know what to expect from another team,” said Prospect coach Frank Medina. “You see score lines from another team, but you have no idea what to expect. Especially playing on a grass field; (our) guys are used to turf. Live Oak kept pushing and pressing all game, so that was impressive.”
The Acorns (1-8-1, 0-5-0 BVAL-ST) fought hard, but left in search of their first points in league. Prospect (5-5-1, 3-2-0) moved into third place with the win.
“I didn’t know anything about Prospect,” said Live Oak coach Anthony Martinez. “I was just hoping to keep the game within a goal, and we did. I was trying to stop giving up three or four goals. Since we have injured players, I was just trying to keep the game close. I put my best players toward the back.”
Prospect took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute as Juan Mora assisted Hariman Moussavizadeh.
“It happened so fast. I just kind of got control of the ball and put it on my left foot. I aimed for the far corner and just took it,” said Moussavizadeh. “I expected my team to do a lot better, but we just didn’t have our day today.”
The Panthers took the 1-0 lead into the half. Then a pair of own goals - one from each team - rounded out the scoring.
“It was a breakdown in the back line, where both of them went to step to the attacker. And neither one of them dropped into a cover angle,” said Medina. “Once he beat one, he beat both. When he tried to come back to cover, his hips were pointing towards the goal.”
“I don’t know what happened on their end, but on ours he just looked like he went to clear it out,” said Martinez. “He just hit it the wrong way. He just hit it into our goal. He toe-poked it right in.”
Prospect visits Branham on Thursday. Live Oak travels to Andrew Hill, also on Thursday.
