Live Oak walks past Christopher

March 9, 2013

A wet Thursday in Morgan Hill ended in Live Oak defeating visiting Christopher 9-8.

“I thought it was a good matchup; both teams hit the ball really well,” said Christopher coach Allison Robinson, “I think early on in the game we really hurt ourselves when they scored four runs in the first inning. A couple of little mistakes came back to bite us.”

Christopher rebounded in the second inning with a rally to get back in the game.

Live Oak sophomore first baseman Tiffany Moore responded to Christopher's rally with a solo home run.

“It was a high inside pitch and that was my favorite pitch so I just turned on it,” said Moore.

With Live Oak leading 7-3 in the fourth, Christopher responded with a home run by center fielder Brittany Souza.

“I went up there and was like ‘this thing is gone’ and there it went," Souza said. "The girls came back and that totally helped. Just hitting it over and the girls thought ‘Oh I could do that’. (Karli Martinez) hit a triple and everybody really stepped up and came together as a team.”

It wasn’t until the seventh when the rain finally hit hard and the game became more intense.

The Cougars tallied three times, aided greatly by a two-run, inside-the-park home run, tying the game. Live Oak finally quelled the uprising by catching a foul pop.

The Acorns filled the bases in their next at-bat.

“The pitching was hard because the rain made it wet,” said Souza, “It was happening to the other team before also. The weather was the biggest downfall.”

Despite the challenge of a wet ball, Christopher struck out two, but then bases-loaded walks brought in the winning run for the Acorns.

“A couple mistakes cost us the game," Robinson said. "And with the rain, that didn’t help. Offensively, everybody swung the bat really well. Two home runs over the fences; you don’t see that very often in high school softball.”

Christopher (4-3) also fell to Aptos on Friday and will be at Wilcox on Tuesday. Live Oak (1-1) hosts Willow Glen on Tuesday.
