Miramonte blows past Clayton Valley Charter

January 14, 2018

After losing by nine to Carondelet on January 6, Miramonte welcomed in Clayton Valley Charter for their first league game. After a slow start, the Matadors proved to be rude hosts, blowing past the Eagles for a one-sided victory, 75-47.

Four minutes into the game, Clayton Valley Charter had a quick 8-4 over Miramonte, thanks to a strong early effort from senior guard Kelly Osterkamp and sophomore Ysobelle Eustaqiuo. Miramonte had missed its eight three-point attempts up to that point, and Clayton Valley’s zone defense was giving the Matadors some early issues.

Miramonte started to hit more shots, however, and in the last four minutes of the quarter they went on a 12-2 run and took the lead, 16-10.

“We couldn’t hit our open threes, which we usually make, and turned the ball over a few more times then we would have liked," said Miramonte coach Kelly Sopak, referring to the slow start.

The Matadors turned up the full court defensive pressure in the second quarter, creating open looks in transition. Miramonte hit a barrage of shots from three-point range, and got easy layups to pull away, leading 39-15 at the half.

Miramonte continued to lead with defense in the second half, forcing 12 more Clayton Valley turnovers and pulling away for the comfortable win.

“We struggled from the field after our early hot start," said Clayton Valley coach Paul Kommer. "We turned the ball over a lot and Miramonte played great defense on us”.

Junior wing Emily Houston and sophomore wing Erin Tarasow both had 10 points to lead Miramonte, while freshman point guard Mia Mastrov added nine.  In the loss, Clayton Valley was led by sophomore Ysobello Eustaquio, who scored 17, and also senior captain Kelly Osterkamp had 15.

In the next matchup on Monday in the MLK Classic at Marin  Catholic, Clayton Valley (8-7) faces Santa Rosa. Miramonte (12-4) defeated La Jolla Country Day in the MLK showcase at St Mary’s High School in Stockton on Saturday.
