Ewing sets rushing record, but Cap falls short

November 18, 2012

Mission accomplished. Sort of.

Capuchino High running back Justin Ewing gained more than enough yards to break the Central Coast Section single-season rushing record, but Cap fell short as a team, losing to host Seaside 56-21 Friday night.

The setback for Cap (6-5) came in a CCS Division IV playoff opener.

Ewing ran for 184 yards to easily attain the record with 2,704 yards in 11 games. In doing so, he became the first player to rush for more than 100 yards against Seaside all season.

"It's bittersweet," Ewing said. "We got the record, but we lost. The score doesn't show the work we put in."

Added Cap coach Adam Hyndman: "It was well-deserved and I am excited for Justin. To break it against a team that took pride in stopping running backs makes it even more special. It truly shows how much passion he runs with. We are proud of him."

But No. 1 Seaside (11-0) had an answer as Spartan quarterback Michael Turner ran for four touchdowns and threw for two in the Spartans' blowout victory. The versatile Spartan QB ran for more than 120 yards and threw for nearly 290.

Ewing's 15-yard scoring run cut Seaside's second quarter lead to 21-13, but Seaside bounced right back with a 19-yard TD run by Joseph Jakubowsky.

Seaside led 35-13 at the half.

The Spartans will now face Menlo in the semifinals.
