SAN FRANCISCO - St. Ignatius recently held a Media Day highlighting fall sports. The following is a brief outlook of the fall sports teams at SI. For a look at the football team's outlook, please click here.
Girls Tennis
After a 4-3 finish to the pandemic shortened season, the Wildcats will look to leverage their team camaraderie to aim even higher this season.
“This year, the goal is team spirit,” said head coach Jessica Ruth, “It can be the difference between a win and a loss, and it can make a team scary.”
Captain Mailey Nakamura added: “Our goal for this season, and I think the girls will agree with me, is to be the loudest team in the league. This year we really want to grow as a family.”
Roaring with pride, the team will start the season September 8 against Urban, with a key clash against rivals Sacred Heart Catheral coming up on October 5.
Girls Golf
One of the few teams to return to normalcy, the SI girls golf team looks to improve upon last year’s solid finish.
“Our goal is to improve our short game and our mental toughness,” said co-captain Milan Murphy, “Staying positive, knowing there are seven other girls out there with you really helps.”
The Cats will look to build off of their spring season.
“We haven’t really lost our stride after the spring season. It feels like we were just swinging the clubs, and that will help us in this coming season,” said co-captain Elisabeth Schuth.
The Wildcats opened their season Thursday with a 234-257 loss to Sacred Heart Cathedral, but will look to get back on track September 7 at Presentation.
Girls Volleyball
The girls volleyball team will look to return to dominance after a season in which they weren’t allowed to step in the gym. Led by reigning Italian-American Club Volleyball Player of the Year Claire Untalan, the 'Cats began their campaign with a 3-2 win over University last week.
“Our goals this year are to win the WCAL title, win the CCS title,” said coach Jen Curtin.
SI went 4-1 in the August 28 Milpitas Spikefest and improved to 7-1 overall with wins over Burlingame and Lincoln-San Francisco this week. The Wildcats' next match is at home against Lowell next Wednesday.
In order to reach their goals, the Wildcats will need to get through tough division rivals Sacred Heart Cathedral (Oct. 5, Oct. 26) and Archbishop Mitty (Sep. 15, Oct. 7).
“I’m so excited to play these great teams,” said co-captain Madison Guarin, “They’ll really push us, and help us become the team we want to be."
