Senior guard Grant Vermeer led a balanced attack with 21 points as Bellarmine registered its first league win of the season with a 75-39 victory over visiting Valley Christian Wednesday night in West Catholic Athletic League action. Following losses to Archbishop Mitty and Sacred Heart Cathedral to open league play, the Bells (11-2, 1-2) raced out to a 14-point lead at the end of the first quarter and were never seriously threatened by the Warriors (5-8, 0-3).
Bellarmine Point guard Isaac Gayles added 11 points and center Jack O'Hara and swingman Dylan Tarpening pitched in with 10 points apiece for the Bells, who blew the game open with a 19-7 third quarter to extend their lead to 55-29 at the end of three periods. Bellarmine hit 8 shots from beyond the arc, including three apiece by Gayles and Vermeer.
Senior Anthoni Rueca led the way with 15 points - including four 3-pointers - for the Warriors, who look for their first league win Thursday night (7:30 pm) at home against second-ranked Sacred Heart Cathedral. Fourth-ranked Bellarmine tries to make it two in a row when it travels to San Mateo to take on No. 3 Serra.
