SAN JOSE - Eric Espinoza and Darren Chetchutti scored in the latter part of each half to lead Archbishop Mitty to a 2-0 win over visiting Sacred Heart Cathedral Saturday afternoon in West Catholic Athletic League boys soccer action. The Monarchs improved to 4-0-1 overall, 2-0 in the WCAL; the Fightin' Irish dropped to 4-2, 0-2.
In a hard-fought match that featured several yellow cards on each side, Mitty took a 1-0 lead off a set piece with just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Right back Connor Sexton lofted a long, high ball into the area that Espinoza headed over the outstretched arms of onrushing Sacred Heart Cathedral goalkeeper Alejandro Munoz.
In the 65th minute, Mitty extended the lead to 2-0 when Chetchutti stole the ball from an Irish defender, fought off a shirt tug and then slotted the ball to the lower left corner at a tight angle.
The Irish visit Branham December 30 (1 pm) in non-league action. Mitty hosts fellow defending Central Coast Section champion Alisal December 27 (3:30 pm).
