MURPH'S PLACE: Fox finds home, Stone stars and more

September 5, 2016

The basketball odyssey of Josh Fox continues as he was signed by the Chelshire Phoenix of England.

Fox is a former Sacred Heart Cathedral star who later played at UC-Riverside, City College of San Francisco and UC-Davis.

“In Josh we have signed a real hard-nosed competitor which we feel fits in with the identity we are trying to build from Day 1 of preseason,” Phoenix coach Colin O’Reilly said via release. “Josh brings great versatility for our lineup where we can use him in numerous positions on both ends of the floor.”

The 6-foot-6 forward grew up in Daly City but was born in Fiji and is part of the Fijian national team.

Fox signed with UC-Riverside out of Sacred Heart Cathedral, but left the Highlanders due to their plodding style of play, according to what Fox told the San Francisco Examiner. He fit in better at CCSF and UC-Davis and made the All-Big West Conference second team last year, averaging 14.9 points per game.

GARZA TO UC-IRVINE: Archbishop Mitty junior basketball player Tahlia Garza has committed to UC-Irvine. Tweeted Mitty coach Sue Phillips: “Congrats to SJ Cagers & AMHS '17 Tahlia Garza @talzgarz on her verbal commitment to @UCIwbb #ProudCoach.”

SI GRAD TAKES NEWS POST: Former St. Ignatius soccer player Gabe Saucedo is the new men’s soccer coach at Skyline College.

He previously coached at SI, Loyola-Los Angeles High and City College of San Francisco. He also serves as a staff coach for the San Francisco Elite Academy which competes in the US Soccer Development Academy and National Premier League.

“Really good leadership here, the whole package,” Saucedo told The Skyline View, a student publication. “The academics here are strong … and the soccer facility here at Skyline is really second to none.”

VC GRAD STONE EARNS HONOR: Former Valley Christian star Ronika Stone was named MVP of last weekend’s Oregon Classic volleyball tournament.

Stone led Oregon to victory with a tournament-high 12 blocks, while adding 11 kills on .435 hitting with just one error. Her highlight was a seven-block performance Friday night in a win against San Diego State. She is the daughter of former San Francisco 49er offensive lineman Ron Stone.

FETED: Half Moon Bay running back Chase Hofmann and St. Francis-Mountain View coach Greg Calcagno were honored last week by the San Francisco 49ers. Hofmann was named player of the week after rushing for 243 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-26 win against Saratoga. Calcagno was named the Charlie Wedemeyer coach of the week after leading St. Francis to a 24-7 win against Oak Grove. Both HMB and St. Francis won this past weekend as well.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN: A Serra alumnus pointed out to me that Serra’s stellar 1968 football team is not a part of the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame (though the 1954 team is). Perhaps the ’68 squad has not been nominated by anyone, but it should be.

The ’68 Padres went 9-1 including a 6-0 record in the WCAL, beat every team in league by at least 12 points and was ranked co-No. 1 in Northern California by the San Francisco Chronicle. Three Padres (Lynn Swann, Tom Scott and Jesse Freitas Jr.) were NFL draft picks and Swann was a Super Bowl MVP and is an NFL Hall of Famer.

WHAT A KNIGHT: Charlie Ferguson wasn't the only Menlo School player who took a liking to Kezar Stadium as he rushed for 250 yards and three touchdowns in the Knights' 35-14 football win Friday night against Mission-San Francisco. JH Tevis also starred for Menlo, sacking the Bears' quarterback six times and recording nine tackles for losses. He's also a basketball star.

GOOD GENES: Casey Mornhinweg, the nephew of former Oak Grove High star quarterback Marty Mornhinweg, threw for 331 yards and four touchdowns last weekend in a 41-13 win against Pajaro Valley. Marty is the quarterbacks coach of the Baltimore Ravens.

CLOSE CALL?: The Santa Cruz Sentinel's Jim Seimas had a classic tweet on Saturday night from a 40-20 Cabrillo College football loss to Mendocino. Tweeted Seimas: "Wish I had a picture. Cabrillo football team lost a measurement that was 3 yards short." Too funny.
