Southern Section Week 5 Games to Watch

September 21, 2016

Henderson (Nev.) Liberty at No. 3 Corona Centennial

The Huskies take put their undefeated record on the line this week when they host one of Nevada’s best programs, Henderson Liberty. Centennial’s high-powered offense, led by junior quarterback Tanner McKee (75-of-110 passing, 1,233 yards, 12 touchdowns, six interceptions) and senior running back Miles Reed (108 carries, 659 yards, nine touchdowns) will face a Patriots defense that has allowed more than 14 points just once in three wins. The two teams face off at Centennial High School at 7 p.m. Friday.

No. 14 Murrieta Valley at No. 6 Oaks Christian

Oaks Christian needed three overtimes to take down Alemany last week in a game that produced 125 total points. We might not see that many points this week, but it’s a game that promises to be a shootout. Murrieta Valley has scored 41 or more points in all but one game this season, a 41-20 loss last week to Rancho Cucamonga. Senior running back Brandon LaBrie lead Oaks Christian offensively with 785 yards on 129 carries and an eye-popping 14 touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Hank Bachmeier powers Murrieta Valley’s air attack, completing 73.3 percent of his passes for 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns with just two interceptions through four games.

No. 5 West Hills Chaminade at No. 23 Gardena Serra

After a loss in a high-scoring affair to open the season, Chaminade has reeled off three straight wins. They’ll travel to Gardena to take on rival Serra, which is looking to string together two victories after starting the season with three consecutive losses to major opponents. Serra will attempt to limit Chaminade’s offense, which scored 42-plus points in three of its four wins. Junior running back TJ Pledger is taking West Hills by storm, rushing for 559 yards and 10 touchdowns on 69 carries. Fellow junior Michael Wilson leads the Eagles in receiving with 24 receptions for 515 yards and five touchdowns.

No. 1 Mater Dei vs. No. 19 Edison

Edison recorded its closest win of the season last week, a 24-17 victory over San Juan Hills, and the hurdle becomes much greater in Week 5 when Mater Dei comes to town. The top-ranked Monarchs are rolling and will come in looking to do more of the same. The Chargers will have to put up plenty of points to keep pace with the Monarchs, and will turn to senior wideout Shaun Colamonico (20 receptions, 446 yards, six touchdowns) to account for much of the receiving end of the passing game. A win is a tall task - Mater Dei has outscored opponents 236-21 in four games — but not out of the realm of possibility, and would be a massive triumph for the Chargers.
