Week 6 Southern Section Highlights

October 2, 2016

No. 4 Mission Viejo 55, El Toro 14

The Diablos are a tough opponent to keep in check on any night, but when quarterback Matt McDonald and receiver Austin Osborne are working at a high clip, it’s nearly impossible. El Toro learned that Friday, as McDonald and Osborne hooked up for six connections for 222 yards and five touchdowns in the first half, propelling Mission Viejo to a blowout win. McDonald finished 12 of 21 passing for 358 yards and seven touchdowns, while Mission Viejo’s defense clamped down on El Toro, holding the Chargers 52 total yards rushing as the Diablos dominated from start to finish.

No. 14 Long Beach Poly 77, Long Beach Cabrillo 0

If the Jackrabbits needed any proof of which team was the best in Long Beach, they got it Friday night. Poly led 28-0 after one quarter and entered a running clock in the second half as the game was only close at the opening kickoff. Five different Jackrabbits scored on the ground, seven players combined for 285 yards rushing, and four different receivers caught touchdowns as Poly rolled to a gigantic shutout win against its crosstown rivals.

No. 15 Calabasas 37, Valencia 21

Friday night was senior quarterback Tristan Gebbia’s to own. The Calabasas passer completed 35 of 51 attempts for 503 yards and three touchdowns, propelling the Coyotes’ offense to a road victory. Gebbia scored again on the ground, joining sophomore running back Johnny Williams as one of two Coyotes to record a rushing touchdown. Three different Calabasas receivers caught touchdowns, and Darnay Holmes led all Coyote wideouts with 11 receptions for 171 yards in just the first half, as a shoulder injury forced him to miss the rest of the game. The aerial assault helped Calabasas remain undefeated and firmly at No. 15 in Prep2Prep’s Top 25.

No. 17 Norco 56, Chino Hills 28

The Cougars dominated from the beginning of the contest, taking a 42-7 lead into halftime. Norco found its way on the ground, thanks to a team effort. Three Cougars scored touchdowns on the ground, with junior Travis Dye scoring twice. Dye, senior Noah Kelsoe and sophomore DJ Ford combined to rush for 222 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Nick Lasher added 60 yards on two carries to go along with 15-of-25 passing for 248 yards and three touchdowns. The Cougar defense did its part as well, holding the Huskies to just seven points until the fourth, when the game was in hand. It resulted in Norco’s second straight win, much needed after back to back losses to Rancho Cucamonga and Orange Lutheran earlier in the season.
