Texas 6A Week Seven Headlines

October 10, 2016

Westlake embarrassed by Lake Travis

For a ninth consecutive year, the Lake Travis Cavaliers defeated the Westlake Chaparrals. The rivalry turned ugly in 2016, however, as the top 10 teams clashed, resulting in a one-sided affair. The Cavaliers trounced the Chaps, 49-7, after an early injury to Westlake quarterback Sam Ehlinger. Lake Travis quarterback Charlie Brewer captained a Cavaliers offense which had 412 yards of total offense and the Cavs’ defense played tough, only giving up 177 yards of offense. The blowout victory puts Lake Travis in sole possession of first place in District 25-6A.

Trinity upset by winless Nelson

Astonished. Bewildered. Speechless. Those three words sum up the reaction that many football fans across the state had upon seeing the final result of Euless Trinity vs Byron Nelson. At half, the two teams were locked in a scoreless affair but no one imagined the game would end like it did. Spectators and Trinity hopeful waited and waited for their beloved Trojans to pull away in the second half; however, the Bobcats stayed within striking distance at all times. At the end of regulation, the score was tied at 14 and the Bobcat faithful rose to their feet. In the end, it was junior running back Jayden Joiner who sealed the deal for Nelson, finishing the night with three touchdowns, including the game-winning score to give Nelson the 21-20 upset victory and its first win.

DeSoto, The Woodlands, and Allen remain perfect

The state’s top three 6A programs remained undefeated, all grabbing major victories in week seven. DeSoto’s Shawn Robinson lead the Eagles offense to 52 points behind his 109.8 passer rating. The Eagles defeated Grand Prarie 52-17. Meanwhile, the Eagles from Allen outlasted Plano 38-15.

A combined 31-point second and third quarters eventually elevated Allen to the win, holding the Wildcat offense to just eight points before a garbage time touchdown in the fourth quarter. Allen improved to 6-0 heading into its duel with highly ranked Guyer.

The Woodlands took care of business yet again, defeating its second undefeated team in its last two games. The Highlander defense held West Brook, an offense who had scored 241 points prior, to just seven points in the 72-7 blow out.

North Shore outlasts Atascocita

Speaking of great defenses, the North Shore Mustangs held Atascocita to just 12 yards rushing on 20 attempts. Atascocita went down early 14-0 as quarterback Daveon Boyd struggled to get anything going on the offensive side of the ball. On the other side, quarterback Bryant Badie and North Shore’s up-tempo offense slowly grinded away at the Atascocita defense, exhausting them as every play went on. Atascocita pulled within three in the third quarter at 17-14 but North Shore never broke. The Mustangs scored two more touchdowns to seal the game, the game was likely to end at 31-14 before a last second touchdown on a Hail Mary pass from Boyd to Griffin Hammond made it 31-21.

Alief Taylor proves to be legitimate

Sitting at 7-0, the number two team in the greater Houston area, the Alief Taylor Lions. Through seven games this season, the Lions’ defense has only allowed 52 points, one of the lowest point totals in the state of Texas thus far. The offense is scoring at a near 5:1 ratio vs opponents offense’s. The Lions have some resume building wins over teams such as Pearland but the hardest part of the schedule is yet to come. To wrap up the regular season, Alief Taylor ends with a game on the road at Dawson and at home versus George Ranch. Can the Lions finish the regular season undefeated? How deep can the Lions venture into the playoffs? As you watch high school football in coming weeks, make sure to keep an eye on the Lions from Alief Taylor in Houston.
