Cardinal Newman, Rancho Cotate standouts headline NBL-Oak honors

December 13, 2018

Cardinal Newman and Rancho Cotate dominated play throughout the season in the North Bay League's Oak Division, so it was no surprise to see those two teams dominate the awards when the all-league honors were announced.

Cardinal Newman two-way senior standout Dino Kahaulelio was named the league's Most Valuable Player, after anchoring the Cardinals' offense from his center position on the offensive line, while once again shining on the defensive side of the ball. Kahaulelio racked up 119 total tackles, including 16 tackles for a loss, and six sacks while roaming the field from his linebacker position.

Newman junior quarterback Jackson Pavitt was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Rancho senior linebacker Elias Rantissi earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Pavitt completed 77 percent of his passes for 2,494 yards and 30 touchdowns, with just three interceptions, and added 552 yards and 11 scores on the ground. Rantissi had a whopping 168 total tackles and four tackles, amassing over 600 stops during his varsity career with the Cougars.

Rancho Cotate kicker Andrew Alfaro and Cardinal Newman kicker Matt Nielsen shared Specialist of the Year honors, while Newman senior Chauncey Leberthon was named Defensive Back of the Year. Rancho defensive end Connor Barbato earned Lineman of the Year honors, while Maria Carrillo senior Tyler Van Arden and Rancho junior Rasheed Rankin shared the Back of the Year award.
