16 boys' teams played nearly nonstop tennis Friday, fitting four matches in to beat the rain and finished an exciting Bay Area Classic hosted by Menlo School on Friday.
Menlo took third place after defeating Bellarmine in a rematch of last season's CCS team championship. Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach edged Canyon Crest of San Diego, also winning on a tiebreaker, to take first. It was the second year for the event, which was played at the Cartan and Wunderlich courts at Menlo, as well as at Sacred Heart Prep and Menlo-Atherton. Last season, however, the planned two-day event was rained out and Menlo and Monta Vista played a Monday match to determine the winner. This time, all the teams got in four matches in the three singles, three doubles format.
In the third-place match, senior captain Andrei Volgin fresh off his soccer season which ended in the CCS title game, defeated Bellarmine's Luke Casper in a supertiebreaker to lead the Knights at No. 1 singles. The doubles teams of freshmen Nishan Rajavasireddy and Rishi Jain at No. 2 and senior Luca St. Goar and freshman Mick Tamas at No. 3 also picked up wins.
