Bay Area Baseball Top 25 Rankings

May 27, 2014

Mitty moves into the top spot by virtue of its performance in the CCS Open Division playoffs, but Bellarmine looks to overtake the Monarchs with the semifinals taking place this week.

These are based on games played through May 24.

Last week’s rankings are in parentheses.

1 (2) Archbishop Mitty 24-6

Luke Rasmussen’s seventh-inning home run lifted the Monarchs to the CCS Open semifinals in a 4-3 win versus San Benito.

In the two playoff wins, Rasmussen homered in each game and Kris Bubic allowed one unearned run in eight innings.

Mitty now meets Bellarmine in a Wednesday night semifinal. The teams have split their two meetings this season.

2 (1) *St. Francis 26-5

The defending champions were knocked off in the CCS Open quarters against rival Bellarmine, 2-0. Not only were the Lancers no-hit, but it was the first time they were shut out this season.

3 (3) Bellarmine 25-7

It’s difficult to keep the Bells behind the Lancers after Corby Punian tossed a no-hitter in a 2-0 quarterfinal win. However, the Lancers won the three previous meetings and outscored Bellarmine, 25-9, in those games.

Because it's still alive in the CCS Open semifinals, there is still a good chance Bellarmine can vault past St. Francis.

4 (4) Valley Christian-San Jose 22-9

The Warriors needed 12 innings in the opening round to beat Soquel, 2-1, and then shut down Scotts Valley, 3-0, behind Chris Manderson and Ben Hughes. Theron Kay pitched nine shutout innings against Soquel and had a key two-run double versus the Falcons.

The Warriors play Leland in the CCS Open semifinals.

5 (5) San Ramon Valley 19-7

The Wolves have scored 19 runs in the two playoff wins to reach the NCS Division I semifinals for the first time in 10 years. This includes a 10-5 victory over rival Monte Vista. In the two games, Nick Poirier had five hits and four runs batted in.

San Ramon hosts Noah Bremer and Berkeley in the semifinals on Wednesday.

6 (6) De La Salle 19-7

The Spartans scored six in the first inning against Castro Valley in the opening round and then tallied seven runs in the opening inning against Liberty and the result was 12-0 and 14-1 victories, respectively. Over the two games, Ben Polshuk had four hits and four runs batted in.

The Spartans host Foothill in the NCS semifinals, a team they split with this season. The road team won each game, including a wild 14-inning Falcons 8-4 win at De La Salle last month.

7 (9) College Park 25-3

The Falcons outscored two North Bay opponents, 14-1, in their first two NCS playoff wins to reach the Division II semifinals for a third straight season.

Chris Brown pitched a seven-hitter against Cardinal Newman and Joe DeMers tossed a two-hitter versus Petaluma and Trevor Larnach tallied three doubles and five runs batted in over the two contests.

In the semifinals, the Falcons will host another North Bay team, Montgomery, on Wednesday.

8 (NR) Berkeley 17-10

The Yellowjackets make a huge jump because of two impressive wins over highly touted EBAL teams.

Noah Bremer pitched a complete-game gem in a 7-2 win over Cal and then added three shutout innings in relief in a 1-0 win against a Granada team it lost to earlier this season.

Bremer pitches at San Ramon Valley in a NCS Division I Wednesday semifinal.

9 (21) Leland 21-9

The Chargers are the lone non-WCAL team in the CCS Open Division semifinals after Jake Dermer pitched five shutout innings and Brendt Citta had three hits in a 7-0 quarterfinal victory versus Leigh.

10 (14) *Leigh 24-7

In a CCS Open quarterfinal loss to Leland, 7-0, the top-seeded Longhorns were eliminated by a team they defeated twice in March.

11 (7) *Amador Valley 16-9

The Dons were ousted by Kevin Nava and San Leandro in the NCS Division I opening round, 3-1, allowing three unearned runs and collecting just five hits.

12 (15) *Granada 17-9

The Mats fell to Berkeley in nine innings, 2-0, in the NCS Division I quarterfinals after a 1-0 opening round win over Dougherty Valley when Robert Chioino allowed just one hit.

13 (18) Foothill 15-11

The Falcons finished in a tie for sixth in the EBAL but are in the NCS Division I semifinals for the first time in four years after a 6-2 win over Deer Valley and a 10-0 triumph against San Leandro. Against San Leandro, Kyle Franco pitched a six-inning no-hitter and also delivered three hits and four runs batted in.

Foothill stays behind some eliminated EBAL teams because of the regular season results and because it beat teams not ranked highly.

Foothill can make a big jump in the rankings if it wins at De La Salle on Wednesday.

14 (22) Marin Catholic 21-6

The Wildcats rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 5-4 quarterfinal win at Maria Carrillo.

Bryan Jakiemiec pitched a four-hitter against the Pumas and also delivered three hits.

Marin Catholic hosts Washington-Fremont in a NCS Division II semifinal.

15 (16) *San Benito 22-7

The Haybalers scored a 4-3, 10-inning opening round win over Serra as Garrett Kelly and Zack Moeller homered but San Benito fell to Mitty, 4-3, in the quarterfinals.

16 (8) *California 17-8

The Grizzlies fell, 7-2, to Noah Bremer and Berkeley in the NCS Division I first round and ended the season with a three-game losing streak.

17 (13) *Maria Carrillo 25-3

The Pumas' 22-game win streak came to a close in a 5-4 NCS Division II quarterfinal loss to Marin Catholic.

Peter Hoge pitched a five-hitter in a 4-0 opening-round win over Northgate.

18 (10) *Campolindo 20-5

The four-time NCS Division II champion Cougars were stunned in the first round in a 1-0 loss to Casa Grande.

The most impressive wins for the Cougars this year were against Berkeley and Serra.

Even though they lost to Casa Grande, the Cougars stay in the rankings and the Gauchos are out because of a better overall body of work.

19 (11) *Clayton Valley 22-5

The Ugly Eagles were stunned, 3-0, in a NCS Division II opening-round loss to Newark Memorial against a team it beat in April, 11-1.

20 (NR) *San Leandro 21-7

The Pirates enjoyed their first NCS playoff win in at least 20 years with a 3-1 win against Amador Valley before they were humbled in a 10-0 loss at Foothill.

Kevin Nava tossed a four-hitter against the Dons.

21 (NR) Montgomery 19-7

The Vikings are in the semifinals against College Park after a 6-0 win over Concord and a 3-2 triumph against Newark Memorial. Jared Noonan tossed a three-hitter against Concord.

22 (12) *Serra 16-12

The Padres' difficult schedule included seven losses by two runs or less.

23 (17) *Saratoga 21-10

The Falcons couldn’t get the bats going in a 2-1 CCS Open Division opening-round home loss to Bellarmine.

24 (25) Westmont 22-9

The Warriors are in the CCS Division I semifinals after a 9-5 win against Milpitas and a 9-0 victory versus Los Altos. Willie McMullen pitched a two-hitter against the Eagles.

25 (20) *Monte Vista 13-13

The Mustangs' season concluded with their third loss to San Ramon Valley, 10-5, after a 3-2, 11-inning win over Bishop O’Dowd in the NCS Division I opening round.
