Sierra Canyon captures West Coast Jamboree Platinum Division title

December 31, 2023

DUBLIN, Calif. – Coming into the 23rd West Coast Jamboree there was little doubt that Sierra Canyon-Chatsworth, as the No. 2 team in the Cal-Hi Sports state rankings, was the Platinum Division favorite in the eight-team field, but to claim the championship they still had to win three games against some pretty tough competition.

In the first round they disposed of Edge School of Calgary, Alberta in a 69-53 victory over one of Canada’s top teams. The semifinals saw the Trailblazers post an impressive 81-57 victory over state No. 5 ranked Sage Hill-Newport Beach.

In the finals, and up against No. 7 ranked Folsom, the Trailblazers got a test from the no-quit Bulldogs. However, in the end Sierra Canyon (13-1) came out on top and delivered head coach Alicia Komaki career win No. 300 after a 68-57 victory in the Platinum Division title game on Saturday night at Dublin High.

Mackenly Randolph, a 6-0 senior star that left little doubt she was the top player in the Jamboree, and at the same time established herself as a solid candidate for Cal-Hi Sports Ms. Basketball State Player of the Year, was honored with the David “Scoop” Jackson Most Valuable Player award in the top division of the Jamboree.

Randolph finished with a huge double-double 18 points and 15 rebounds with three assists and two blocked shots against Folsom after going for 25 points with eight rebounds and five assists Sage Hill, and 22 points including two three-pointers plus five rebounds in the Edge victory.

Other all tourney selections for Sierra Canyon included Louisville-bound senior guard Izela Arenas. She didn’t hit double-figure scoring against Folsom but had 15 points and four rebounds in the Sage Hill win, and 14 points and nine rebounds against Edge School.

Sophomore phenom Jerzy Robinson was also all tournament. She had 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals against Folsom, a double-double 19 points and 13 rebounds versus Sage Hill, and another double-double 17 points and 12 rebounds in the Edge win.

The third Trailblazer to make all tourney was Emilia Krstevski. With the tree big Trailblazers stars getting almost all the spotlight, at the Jamboree the 6-5 sophomore post turned more than one head with her stellar play all tournament. Her best game came on the biggest stage in the finals against Folsom when she had a double-double with a team-high 20 points with 11 rebounds. Against Sage Hill she went for a double-double 13 points and 13 rebounds with four blocks. For a big girl Krestevski can run the floor, has a soft touch, uses the glass, and gets in good position to rebound on both end.

“Emilia had an outstanding tournament and showed the things she can do,” said Komaki.

No quit Folsom (10-3) got a solid performance against Sierra Canyon and for that matter the entire tournament from Kamryn Mafua. In the championship game Mafua had 17 points, six rebounds and two steals. Against Cal-Hi Sports No. 17 St. Joseph-Santa Maria in the semifinals Mafua had a double-double 22 points and 10 rebounds.

For exhibiting the qualities of sportsmanship and inspirational play the Cal-bound Mafua was honored with the Platinum Division’s Jim Capoot Memorial award as her all tournament selection.

The other Bulldogs player to make all tournament was senior guard Ella Uriarte. She had 13 points (two three-pointers) and four assists in the St. Joseph win.

Junior Sophia Mindermann and senior Jada Tupou weren’t all tourney but Mindermann had 14 points (two three-pointers) against Sierra Canyon and Uriarte had 13 points (two three-pointers) in the St. Joseph win.

Third place in the Platinum Division went to Sage Hill (11-2) after a 58-46 victory over St. Joseph. Senior Emily Eadie led the Lightning with 19 points.

Sophomore sensation Amalia Holguin only had six points with four assists against St. Joseph, but she went for 31 (four three-pointers) in the loss to Sierra Canyon and that earned her all tournament honors. Senior Zoie Lamkin was the other all tourney selection for Sage Hill.

The all tournament selection for St. Joseph was Avary Cain. Against Folsom in the semifinals the UCLA-bound senior lefthander dazzled the crowd with her slick moves. She finished with 24 points (two three-pointers, five rebound and three assists), and against Sage Hill Cain went for 24 points again, this time with three three-pointers.

Clovis wins Diamond Division

In the No. 2 division of the Jamboree based on competitive equity it was Clovis (10-6) winning 57-54 over Chaminade-West Hills in a close, back and forth game where no team led by more than five points.

Trailing 54-52 with 38 seconds left, sophomore Yazmin Aguilera hit her fourth three-pointer of the game, Sadie Sin followed with a free throw, and Aguilera hit a free-throw to close out the scoring as the Clovis defense held tight down the stretch.

Sin was named the David “Scoop” Jackson Most Valuable Player award winner for the Diamond Division. Aguilera and sophomore Taylor Neal-Larkin were also named all tournament for Clovis.

Chaminade (8-5) had two players make all tournament. Senior Alyssa Saldana was honored with the Jim Capoot Memorial award for the Diamond Divisionand sophomore Peyton Montgomery was named all tournament.

Whitney takes Emerald title

Whitney-Rocklin (13-3) got a solid double-double 20 points and 12 rebounds from 6-3 Stanford-bound senior Harper Peterson to win the Jamboree’s No. 3 division based on competitive equity with a 51-41 victory over St. Mary’s-Inglewood.

For her efforts over the entire tournament Peterson was named the David “Scoop” Jackson Most Valuable Player for the Emerald Division.

In the opener against Moreau Catholic-Hayward Peterson went for a double-double 11 points and 10 rebounds in an easy win, and then in a semifinal 49-42 victory over Kamehameha Kapalana of Honolulu, Hawaii, Peterson had 20 points and eight rebounds with four assists.

Other Whitney players to make all tournament were two-sport star (softball) Tylie Kitchen and Sammy Schuler.

St. Mary’s (10-5) had sophomore Layia King as the Jim Capoot Memorial award winner for the Emerald Division and junior Ebony Wilson as an all tournament selection.
