Following a loss to Aragon April 11, the Capuchino softball team was just 5-10 overall, 3-3 in the PAL-Bay. But the Mustangs turned it around the next day with a 14-0 non-league win over Notre Dame-Belmont and finished the regular season with 9 wins in their last 10 games.
Saturday morning at San Jose City College, Capuchino continued its run with a 7-3 win over Milpitas for the CCS Division 2 championship behind a three-hitter from junior Lola Sierra, who finished with 10 strikeouts. Junior Avery Motroni hit a solo HR and junior Nadia Keishk had two of Capuchino’s seven hits. Sophomore Chloe Cabrera hit a solo homer for the Trojans. Capuchino advances to the NorCal Division 3 playoffs and will travel to Cardinal Newman Tuesday.
Milpitas finished 19-10. The Trojans advanced to the final with wins over Scotts Valley and Valley Christian. Senior Priyah Quinonez threw a two-hit shutout with 8 Ks and Cabrera hit a two-run double in the 3-0 win over Scotts Valley. Against Valley Christian, Quinonez was also strong, allowing just six hits and an unearned run in an 8-1 win. Senior Brooke Vogel drove in three runs with a double.
The Mustangs opened the playoffs with a 7-0 win over Saratoga behind Sierra, who allowed just one hit and one walk and struck out seven. Senior Liz Do went 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs. In the 3-1 semifinal win over Mountain View, Sierra again allowed just one hit and one walk and also went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.
