WCAL Report: Serra, Riordan continue collision course

October 12, 2026

Junipero Serra and Archbishop Riordan posted impressive one-sided wins and moved one step closer to a potential clash of unbeatens on Halloween in the City.

Serra scored 42 first-half points and coasted to a 49-14 win over Archbishop Mitty. Senior Andrew Takapautolo opened the scoring for the Padres (5-1, 3-0 WCAL) with a short touchdown run. Senior tight end Jace Cannon caught a pair of touchdown passes, one from his brother Jax and the other from senior Malakai Taufoou. Taufoou also scored on a 63-yard run to give the Padres a 42-0 halftime lead.

Meanwhile, Riordan also improved to 3-0 in the WCAL with a 27-7 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral. Braxton LaRosa hit Maxwell Mitchell with a 17-yard touchdown pass and Tevita Tuifua had a key fumble recovery and interception return for a touchdown to lead the Crusaders, who built a 20-0 halftime lead. The Irish scored their only points on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Jared Camara to Germanine Powell.

Riordan visits Mitty Friday, and Sacred Heart Cathedral hosts Serra Saturday.

For the second week in a row, Bellarmine (5-1, 2-1) leaned on its defense for a hard-fought WCAL victory, 7-0, at Valley Christian. The only score of the game came on a touchdown run by Justin Donahue to cap a 14-play drive in the first quarter. Last week, Bellarmine snapped a 16-game league losing streak with a 10-7 win over Mitty.

In the other week 7 WCAL matchup, St. Ignatius (5-1, 2-1) overcame an early deficit to post a 31-20 win over Saint Francis, dropping the Lancers to 0-3 in league play. Sophomore quarterback Issac Liu threw for 305 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats, who spotted the Lancers a 14-0 second-quarter lead before rallying.

In week 8, the Wildcats visit Bellarmine, and Saint Francis hosts Valley Christian.
