It took a great run in the semifinals but we got up over the .500 mark in predicting this wildly unpredictable CCS baseball tournament. Well, not so much in the Open Division, where the top two seeds - and consensus top two teams in CCS all season - St. Francis and Los Gatos will square off for the championship.

Meanwhile, Piedmont Hills will try to make history as a No. 16 seed looking to snag a Division I championship. And MTAL power Carmel will face off against Sacred Heart Prep for the Division II title.

OPEN DIVISION PREDICTIONS:

#1 LOS GATOS (0-0-0) vs. #2 ST. FRANCIS (0-0-0)
Junior Hunter Bigge continued his remarkable season by firing a one-hit shutout with five strikeouts and no walks in a 3-0 win over Carlmont in the semifinals. Bigge is on the short list of candidates for CCS Player of the Year as he has been outstanding both on the mound (12-2, 0.68 ERA, 43 H allowed in 82 1/3 IP) and at the plate (.398 BA, 38 R, 31 RBIs, 1.067 OPS). He can still pitch three innings in the final if needed, but fellow junior Jake Holton (9-2, 1.80 ERA) will likely get the start.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Ydens has kept pace with Bigge, throwing 6 1/3 strong innings in the 7-1 semifinal win over Soquel. Ydens has also been a terror on the mound (7-3, 1.69 ERA) and at the plate (.413, 34 R, 8 HR, 22 RBIs, 1.132 OPS). Like Bigge, Ydens is eligible to pitch limited innings in the final, but the burden will likely fall to senior Andrew Carter (8-0, 1.74 ERA), who threw a five-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in the quarterfinals against Wilcox.

DIVISION I PREDICTIONS:

#7 PIONEER (0-0-0) vs. #16 PIEDMONT HILLS (0-0-0)
The wild and wacky Division I tournament comes to a close with the No. 16 Pirates looking to make history against the No. 7 Mustangs. In the wild nature of this tournament, Piedmont Hills, which had never won a CCS playoff game before this year, knocked off Milpitas, 11-8 after going down to the last strike before rallying with two runs in the seventh to force extra innings. Not only that, the Pirates did so on their graduation day, as the seniors had to scramble back to campus after the game to go through their ceremony. A memorable day indeed.

Meanwhile, Pioneer experienced some drama itself, rallying for three runs in the fourth in a 3-2 win over Sequoia. The Mustangs had just one hit all game but it was a big one, a two-run double by Jake Munson that tied the game. Munson scored what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Joe Roberts.

PREDICTION: Pioneer 7, Piedmont Hills 5

DIVISION II PREDICTIONS:

#4 SACRED HEART PREP (0-0-0) vs. #7 CARMEL (0-0-0)
It has been an incredible season for Sacred Heart Prep sports. The football team won the prestigious CCS Open Division title. The boys basketball team reached the Open Division playoffs. The girls soccer team won a CCS title while the boys reached the championship game in Division III. Now the Gators have an opportunity for yet another CCS title, thanks in large part to lefty Will Johnston, who fired a four-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Monterey in the semifinals.

Carmel reached the title game on the strength of a 4-3 win over Aragon. The Padres scored the winning run in the seventh after Aragon had rallied for three runs in the sixth to tie it.
