After receiving a pass from her teammate, sophomore small forward Jessica Barrow pushed through three Minutemen defenders for a seemingly easy layup. As the Minutemen tried to go on the offensive, she intercepted a pass and drove in for another layup.
Thanks to Barrow’s 41 points, the Sunny Hills Lancers defeated the Maranatha Minutemen 65-48.
“I think we played decent enough defense to keep them at bay,” Lancers head coach Jae Byun said. “And offensively, we just kept working and kept grinding, and Jessica did a good job of attacking.”
Despite the number of points she scored, Barrow still saw room for improvement as she reflected on her performance.
“I think I did OK,” she said. “I still could have gotten more rebounds and made all my free throws and layups.”
Rather, she seemed more impressed with the team’s work overall.
“We shared the ball, we ran our sets well and we hustled on defense,” Barrow said.
As for the Minutemen, they displayed good effort but fell short as the point gap widened in the third and fourth quarters.
“I would have hoped that we executed a little bit better and handled their press better at the beginning,” Minutemen head coach Gamal Smalley said. “They’re a good team and they’re well coached.”
The Lancers (4-2) hope to find more success as they take on an undecided opponent on Tuesday.
“I’m optimistic,” Byun said. “I keep telling the girls to just take it one game at a time, and I see improvement every game.”
