Miramonte cruises past Vanden in opener

August 26, 2017

ORINDA, CA - Unlike last year's back-and-forth battle in the season, Miramonte made sure there was no such drama this time around, staying in control during a 25-7 win over visiting Vanden.

The first score of the game came early in the first quarter when Miramonte running back Peter Stehr ran up the middle for an 8 yard touchdown. Even though they missed the extra point the Matadors had taken the lead. Early in the second quarter, Vanden took a short-lived lead when running back Maurice Brown Jr. broke a few tackles and headed to the end zone. Vanden successfully hit the PAT to take a one point lead, 7-6.

Miramonte took the lead back midway through the second on a trick play, when wide receiver Will Cassriel threw to another wide receiver Keilan Stone for a 71 yard touchdown. After this Miramonte didn’t look back, cruising to the win by adding two more rushing touchdowns, one by Stehr and one from quarterback Xavier Clark.

After the game, both coaches acknowledged that they need to improve on their passing games, which is to be expected since they lost key offensive weapons from last year. Miramonte’s one big passing play accounted for 71 of their 89 total passing yards. Cassriel mentioned after the game that a previous sweep play set up his pass.

Both teams will look to improve their passing games next week when Miramonte hosts St. Mary's, who lost to Rancho Cotate in its opener, and Vanden is at home against Rodriguez.
