SAN JOSE - Trevor Bearden got the record and even more importantly the victory Friday night.
Bearden ran for 276 yards on 39 carries to set the Central Coast Section career rushing record, and Live Oak kicked a late field goal as the Acorns rallied to defeat Lincoln-San Jose in a key BVAL-Santa Teresa game.
"I'm happy to get the record, but I wanted the win for the team," Bearden said. "I wouldn't have cared if I got five yards, just as long as we got the win."
Jesse Martinez assured Live Oak (7-1, 5-0) of the latter, kicking a 23-yard field goal as time expired to give the Acorns a come-from-behind victory. They trailed 14-0 at the half and 21-7 entering the fourth quarter -- though Live Oak scored three plays into the final period on Bearden's 12-yard scoring run.
"We didn't want to be down 14-0 at half, but our kids came back and made it a good football game," Live Oak coach Mike Gemo said.
Regarding Bearden, Gemo said: "I'm proud of that kid. That's a big record around here and it's good for the Live Oak football program, and for him."
Bearden only needed 116 yards to break the record set by San Mateo's Toke Kefu set from 2001-03. He now has 5,600 yards, with Live Oak still having two regular-season games left.
"He's fast and he's shifty and it's hard to contain him," Lincoln two-way starter Juan Delacruz said. "He's a (heck) of a player and I wish him good luck."
Live Oak trailed 21-14 early in the fourth quarter when Brandon Sorce intercepted a pass over the middle, giving Live Oak the ball on the Lion 40. Ten plays later the Acorns tied it on a 2-yard run by quarterback Erik Ornduff.
Following a Lincoln three-and-out, Live Oak took over on its own 47 with 2:57 left. They moved the ball close to the Lincoln goal line with time running down before summoning Martinez for the game-winner.
"Our kids talked at halftime and they decided they're a second-half football team and they came out and proved it," Gemo said.
Lincoln took a 7-0 lead on its first possession on a 20-yard pass from Izaiah Gonzalez to Nathaniel Azure.
The Lions (3-4, 3-1) stretched the lead to 14-0 on its last possession of the first half, scoring on a 12-yard pass from Gonzalez to Kurt Lojera.
Bearden's first TD run, a 6-yard effort, brought Live Oak to within 14-7 with 8:10 left in the third quarter. But Lincoln spurted away again on Gonzalez's third TD pass, a 30-yarder to Jacob Hoekstra.
Live Oak, with only Gunderson and Evergreen Valley to go, seems poised now to win an outright league title. The Acorns are at Gunderson on Friday. Lincoln has three games left, including host Silver Creek on Saturday, Nov. 8.
Besides scoring the tying touchdown, Ornduff completed 5 of 6 passes for 70 yards.
Gonzalez completed 7 of 11 for 153 yards and three touchdowns, with one intercepted.
