LOS GATOS, Calif. - Los Gatos hosted Milpitas for its annual Homecoming game, looking for revenge after taking a tough 17-7 loss last year in Milpitas exactly 365 days ago. The talented Los Gatos football squad came out eager to dominate, and they did just that, blowing out Milpitas 34-3.
Adam Garwood was the offensive standout of the game, rushing for a total of 132 yards and adding another four touchdowns to his season total. Los Gatos quarterback Yost Girvan went 11-of-16 passing for 153 yards with one rushing touchdown of his own.
When asked what was the ticket to success with the rushing game, Garwood only had three words to say before bolting to the locker room: “Great offensive line."
The Los Gatos (5-0, 1-0 SCVAL-De Anza) offensive line is indeed one of the strongest aspects of the team, stacked with many big, talented players who have definitely contributed to Garwood’s success this season with solid blocking.
“We knew we had to execute, because this was our first league game,” said 6’7” 290-pound USC commit Andres Dewerk, who plays a huge role on the Wildcats offensive line. “We’re obviously trying to win league this year.”
The Los Gatos defense bullied the Trojans (1-4, 0-1) all night. Two fumbles, two interceptions, and several sacks kept Milpitas at just one field goal, which was a 38-yarder from Nate Miskella. Miskella tried for a 48-yarder later in the game, but the kick was several yards short. Milpitas quarterback Jovin Becerra struggled to really get anything going with the passing game, as the Los Gatos secondary locked him down.
“Our defense ran around and just really made a lot of plays. When you hold a good team like that to three points, that’s a good night for sure,” reflected Los Gatos head coach Mark Krail.
The Wildcats scored three of their touchdowns in the first half. Garwood scored on two different 35+ yard running plays, and Girvan ran one in himself from 15 yards out. Girvan also connected with receiver Gian Lagemann several times throughout the course of the game, helping the Wildcats into the red zone on multiple occasions. Lagemann finished with 105 receiving yards.
In the second half, Garwood scored on a 20-yard rush and a 15-yard rush. A crucial fourth quarter interception from Ty Goldsbury secured the victory for Los Gatos, keeping their undefeated season alive.
Los Gatos will prepare for their toughest match-up of the season with an away game against reigning CIF champion Wilcox (3-2) next Friday, after the Chargers defeated Palo Alto in their De Anza Division opener. Milpitas will host Mountain View (4-0) next Friday for their second league match-up of the season.
