San Leandro girls volleyball captures San Lorenzo Tournament

August 29, 2016

The San Leandro girls volleyball team ran its overall record to 7-0 this season, as it went unbeaten over six matches at the San Lorenzo Tournament this past weekend.

The Pirates opened with pool play wins over San Lorenzo (2-0), Tamalpais (2-0), and Liberty (2-1). That put them in the top division for bracket play.

San Leandro advanced past Tennyson, 2-0, in the quarterfinals before facing Liberty in the semifinals, for what would prove to be the Pirates' most difficult match of the tournament.

The first set went easily to the Pirates, by the shocking score of 25-6, but the Lions rebounded to win the second set, 25-22, forcing a deciding tie-break set to 15. San Leandro prevailed 15-12 in the tie-break set to advance to the championship, where it swept Tamalpais, 2-0, for the second time during the tournament.

Elizabeth Waters-Leiga was named Tournament MVP. The Pirates next face Redwood Christian, this Wednesday.
