McFarlane resigns at Los Altos; school seeks coach

April 22, 2016

Veteran Los Altos High boys basketball coach Bob McFarlane has resigned from his coaching position, according to the high school’s student publication, “The Talon.”

McFarlane will continue to teach at Los Altos.

McFarlane was the school’s head basketball coach for the past four years, with the apex of his tenure being a Central Coast Section title in 2014-2015. The Eagles defeated Leland in the title game. In all, McFarlane was involved with the program for 12 years.

McFarlane has resigned due to the success of his business (a summer sports camp for children, Bald Eagle Camps) and to spend more time with his family, reported The Talon.

“I’ve been struggling to do all the things that I do for two years,” McFarlane told the student publication. “The problem is I run a business, that’s almost a full-time business, on the side. I also have three little kids who are (going to be on sports) teams and programs and really wanting to be around me… I’m their hero for the next six years until they realize the cape isn’t really there. That’s what happens with all kids at certain ages so I’m going to fly around with that cape a little more before it comes off.”

Said Los Altos athletic director Kim Cave to Prep2Prep: "Bob stepped down because of outside commitments he has right now."

The school is now advertising for a new head boys’ basketball coach.

McFarlane has been at Los Altos for 13-plus years. He is a Chico State grad who received a Masters degree in special education from Santa Clara University. He is a Saratoga High graduate
