Norman wows crowd with blistering 200

May 28, 2016

Michael Norman’s goal is to make it to the 2016 Summer Olympics, and with his performance on Friday he might just do it.

The Vista Murrieta sprinter ran a state record 20.23 in the 200 meters to win the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet. Norman also captured gold in the 400 with a time of 46.21 – winning by more than a full second. The USC-bound sprinter finished out the meet by anchoring Vista Murrieta’s 4x400 relay team to a victory with a time of 3:14.83.

Norman is the heavy favorite in the 200 and 400 in next week’s California track and field championships. Vista Murrieta’s 4x400 relay team will also be favored to win.

Lauren Rain Williams arguably upstaged Norman’s 200 meter performance. Williams won the girls 200 in 22.80 seconds, the sixth fastest time in national history. The Oaks Christian junior was upset in the girls 100 by Rio Mesa senior Zaria Francis. Francis narrowly won with a time of 11.83. Williams ran an 11.84.

Chaminade sprinter T.J. Brock won the boys 100 meters in 10.61 seconds. Brock (USC commit) took first despite being slowed by a hamstring injury.

Agoura junior Tara Davis was a triple winner at the track meet. Davis won the 100 hurdles in 13.64, triple jump with a leap of 41 feet 4 inches and won the long jump in 19 feet 10 inches.

Canyon’s Rachel Baxter tied a meet record in the girls pole vault with a vault of 13 feet 7 inches.

Tesoro’s Amanda Gehrich won the 1600 with a national-best time of 4:41.39.

Westlake thrower Kyle Carrillo threw a personal-best in the discus (200-1) to win.

Bronson Osborn of Esperanza won the shot put with a throw of 68 feet 1 inch.
