SJS Section Week 5 Roundup

October 4, 2016

Home teams went 4-1 this week and two homecomings saw their teams win in magnificent fashion.

Weston Ranch Cougars 0 at Manteca Buffaloes 49

The Buffaloes (5-0, 2-0 VOL) homecoming night couldn’t have gone any better. The defense held its third straight opponent scoreless and the team found its passing attack. Buffaloes wide receiver Joel Olmos caught two touchdown passes, the first one for 13 yards on the first play from scrimmage, and finished with 104 yards.

Manteca scored three times in the first quarter and essentially put the game away at halftime leading 28-0. The Cougars (3-2, 0-2) had absolutely no answer for quarterback Gino Campiotti, who threw three touchdown passes.

Sitting at 5-0, Manteca has positioned itself as the team to beat in the Valley Oak League with a huge matchup with Central Catholic coming in two weeks.

Granite Bay Grizzlies 0 vs Folsom Bulldogs 42

Unfortunately for the Grizzlies (1-5, 0-2 SFL), Friday’s game turned into a 42-0 tuneup match for Folsom (5-1, 2-0) as it prepares for Del Oro next week. Quarterback Joe Curry threw four touchdown passes for the Bulldogs, connecting twice with Jack Sa and once deep with Drake Stallworth for 52 yards for the final touchdown.

Halfway through the season, Folsom might have just finished its most complete game of the season.

Folsom's offense operated with ease, scoring on six of its first eight possessions before its second team entered the game. Granite Bay was held scoreless for the first time this year and has lost three straight games.

Amador Buffaloes 14 at Sonora Wildcats 35

Another homecoming came to a storybook ending for Sonora (6-0, 2-0 MLL) after it battled out a 35-14 victory over previously undefeated Amador (4-1, 1-1). Tied 14-14 to open the half, Sonora’s defense took control of the game when defensive end Evan Bearden strip-sacked Buffaloes quarterback Anthony Burns and Nate Gookin recovered and returned the ball 40 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.

The defensive touchdown seemed to kick-start the offense as the Wildcats scored 21 unanswered points in the second half. Quarterback Josh Harris struggled with two interceptions but still accounted for 174 total yards. Sonora finished with 254 rushing yards on 55 carries.

East Union Lancers 35 at Sierra Timberwolves 36

East Union (4-1, 1-1 VOL) just can’t seem to beat Sierra (4-1, 1-1). Leading by 14 points going into the fourth quarter, the Lancers surrendered two goal-line touchdowns and then allowed a two-point conversion to give the Timberwolves a 37-36 win. It’s the Lancers' 13th consecutive loss to Sierra.

Sierra running back SeuSeu Alofaituli scored the go-ahead touchdown in overtime and instead of kicking an extra point to tie the game, quarterback Mark Vicente sealed the win when he scrambled right and connected with teammate Jesse Babauta for two points.

Alofaituli scored three goal-line touchdowns, including two in the fourth quarter, and Vicente threw for 210 yards.

Antelope Titans 48 at Oakmont Vikings 22

Oakmont (3-2, 0-2 CVC) looked poised to command the game after opening the game with a drive that lasted almost 10 minutes and culminated in a touchdown. But the Vikings defense had no answer for the Titans backfield.

Titans (6-0, 2-0) running back Elijah Dotson had a quiet first half yardage wise, but he ramped it up in the second half with a blistering 80-yard sprint to the end zone. Dotson finished with 158 yards and four touchdowns in the Titans 48-22 win over the Vikings.
