Oliver, Suani highlight WACC-Shoreline football awards

November 28, 2017

After a standout senior season which ended in the NCS Division III quarterfinals, following an unbeaten regular season, Encinal quarterback Theori Oliver was named the WACC-Shoreline Offensive Player of the Year. Meanwhile, Hayward two-way standout Josiah Suani was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year, after leading the Farmers to the playoffs for the fourth straight season.

Oliver, a three-year starter for the Jets, dominated through the air and on the ground, and displayed his versatility by also serving as a defensive leader. He accounted for 52 total touchdowns for the season, completing 68 percent of his passes for 2,253 yards and 28 touchdowns with just three interceptions, while also running for 1,546 yards and 23 scores, averaging 9.2 yards per carry.

For good measure, Oliver returned one of his two interceptions on defense for a touchdown, and totaled 61 tackles, including four tackles for a loss.

Suani used his six-foot, 315-pound frame to anchor both lines for Hayward, but was especially dominant on defense. Playing defensive tackle, he disrupted opposing offenses on a weekly basis, racking up 79 total tackles, including a whopping 32 tackles for a loss, to go with 14 sacks. Arguably, his best performance came in a loss to Encinal, when he had 13 tackles, four tackles for a loss, and four sacks, to go with a blocked field goal.
