NorCal juco roundup: De Anza blanks Gavilan, and more

September 18, 2018

A week after edging Merced on the road, De Anza College made sure things weren’t nearly as close at home against Gavilan, blanking the Rams for a dominant victory on Saturday, 29-0.

The Dons improved to 2-1 after a season-opening shootout loss to unbeaten Reedley, and the defense led the way in the win over Gavilan, allowing just 169 total yards of offense, while the offense compiled 479 total yards. Freshman DeMarcus Miles (James Logan) was a devastating force up front for the De Anza defense, making himself at home in the Rams’ backfield, with three tackles for a loss and three sacks. Meanwhile, Leland Ledger (Leigh) notched two interceptions and a fumble recovery, making himself responsible for three of De Anza’s four forced turnovers in the win.

Offensively, De Anza jumped out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter, when Eduardo Andrade (Wilcox) ran one in from 20 yards out, and then added a 39-yard touchdown pass to Bruce Jones just before the end of the first quarter. Andrade added a 19-yard scoring pass to Cortland Brooks in the second quarter for a 20-0 halftime advantage, and finished his strong performance with a 10-yard toss to tight end Andrew Morgan (Evergreen Valley) on the first play of the fourth quarter, capping an eight-play, 80-yard drive to account for the final points of the game.

Andrade finished the game with 179 yards on 18-of-31 passing, while Necholas Sermons paced the ground attack with 126 yards on 13 carries. Andrade added 11 carries for 88 yards.

De Anza is off this coming week before hosting Redwoods on Sep. 29, in the Dons’ American-Pacific 7 opener.

Laney gets offensive in win over Feather River

Feather River may have struck first on Saturday night in Quincy, but it was all Laney from that point forward, as the Eagles rolled up over 700 yards of total offense during an explosive 55-24 victory to stay unbeaten.

Feather River drove 50 yards before settling for a field goal midway through the first quarter for a 3-0 advantage, but it was short-lived, as Laney quarterback Jordon Brookshire (Cardinal Newman) connected with Balewa Byrd (Swett) for a 74-yard touchdown and a 6-3 lead after one quarter.

The Eagles started to pull away in the second quarter, thanks to a pair of John McDonald (Lincoln-Stockton) touchdown runs, including a 58-yarder with under two minutes remaining in the first half. It appeared as if Laney would go into halftime up 20-3, but Feather River’s Antoine Patton broke loose for a 73-yard score on the next offensive play. The Eagles, however, refused to let that end the first-half scoring, as McDonald reached paydirt one more time, this time from 29 yards out, capping a five-play, 71-yard drive which took just 46 seconds.

Feather River closed the gap one more time on a short touchdown run by Patton to open the third quarter, but Brookshire connected with Quintus Hall and Angelo Garrett (McClymonds) to extend the lead, and fourth-quarter touchdown runs from Kerrion Hadnot and Josh Blocker (Berkeley) put the game away for good.

Brookshire finished the night 14-of-21 passing for 318 yards and three scores, while Byrd led the way with five catches for 138 yards and a touchdown. McDonald led the rushing attack with 127 yards, while Hadnot added 70 yards on just four carries, and Ledre McCullough (Amador Valley) had eight carries for 58 yards. The Laney defense notched 12 total stops behind the line of scrimmage, including three tackles for a loss from linebacker Cam Nathan (Antioch).

Patton was the lone standout for Feather River, carrying the ball 13 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns.

First half offense enough for Foothill

Foothill College improved to 2-1 on Saturday, scoring a pair of first-half touchdowns and holding San Jose to 128 yards of total offense in a 14-0 victory for the Owls.

Steven Mueller connected twice for scores with Raj Ward (Homestead), both of them capping long drives. Mueller’s 11-yard pass to Ward with 57 seconds left in the first quarter finished an eight-play, 98-yard drive, and his 13-yard pass to Ward with 3:21 left in the second quarter was the final play of a 13-play, 93-yard drive that took nearly seven minutes off the clock.

Mueller finished with game with 182 yards through the air, while Ward had five catches for 82 yards. Derje Blanks (Independence) paced the ground game with 14 carries for 76 yards, but the real story was the Foothill defense.

Jack Tittle (Los Gatos) spearheaded the Owls on defense with a 10-tackle, four-sack performance. Foothill’s defense registered 15 total stops behind the line, with Levi Johnson (Valley Christian) making his mark as well, notching nine tackles, including 5.5 tackles for a loss, and a fumble recovery.
