CCS girls soccer: a pair of No. 8 seeds advance

February 24, 2020

A pair of No. 8 seeds made noise in the first round of the CCS girls soccer playoffs and Mountain View prevailed in a clash of two teams that just missed out on the Open Division.

Division 1

Eighth-seeded Notre Dame-Belmont stunned top-seeded Christopher 3-2 behind a pair of second-half goals. Notre Dame will take on Mountain View, which defeated WCAL power St. Ignatius on a goal by sophomore Rebecca Lopez, who was just recently called up from the JV squad. She scored her first varsity goal 15 minutes into the second half.

No. 7 Gunn defeated second-seeded Aptos behind goals from sophomores Ana Schremp and Elina Saab-Sunden. The Titans will play Ann Sobrato, which defeated Branham 1-0 on a goal by junior Erin Hodge with about 15 minutes remaining in the second half.

Division 2

Top-seeded Capuchino defeated Presentation and will take on South San Francisco, which edged Sequoia 3-2 in overtime. Sequoia had taken a 2-0 lead before South San Francisco scored twice in the second half to tie the score before winning in overtime. Sophomore standout Bianca Gonzalez had two assists for the Warriors.

Second-seeded Homestead defeated Prospect 2-0 to advance to the semifinals where they will take on Santa Cruz, a 4-3 winner over Leland in an overtime thriller.

Division 3

Eighth-seeded Menlo pulled the upset defeating top seeded Gilroy 3-0 to advance to take on fifth-seeded Palo Alto, who defeated Hillsdale 2-0. The Vikings are currently on a three-game winning streak and needed those last two regular-season wins just to get into the tournament.

Seventh-seeded Sacred Heart Cathedral and sixth-seeded Burlingame also won, meaning all the lower seeds advanced in Division 3. SHC defeated Monte Vista Christian, while Burlingame took care of Pioneer to advance to the semifinals.

Division 4

Top-seeded Carmel took care of Latino College Prep 3-0 in Monterey on Saturday and will match up with Sacred Heart Prep, which had no trouble with Nueva in the other semifinal. The Gators are led by Megan Tinsley and Isabelle Jordan.

Second-seeded Alisal defeated Mercy Burlingame 3-2 behind a hat trick from star freshman Miriam Hernandez. The Trojans will take on Salinas, which defeated Pajaro Valley 2-0. The two Salinas schools split the season series with both teams winning on the road.
