Sophomore Adam Foeler threw a one-hit shutout to lead Santa Cruz to a 6-0 victory over Piedmont Hills in the CCS Division 4 baseball championship Thursday night at Excite Stadium in San Jose. It was the second CCS championship in program history for the Cardinals, who are the No. 8 seed in the NorCal Division 3 playoffs and will travel to Roseville Tuesday. Piedmont Hills finishes 14-13-2.
Santa Cruz broke open a close game with four runs in the fourth inning, sparked by an RBI triple from freshman Merrick Smith. The Cardinals finished with seven hits and took advantage of four Pirates’ errors leading to two unearned runs.
Piedmont Hills reached the championship game by upsetting No. 1 seed Harbor, 13-9. The Pirates scored eight runs in the first inning as senior Jake Paskert went 3-for-3 with a triple, home run and three walks. Santa Cruz scored three runs in the first en route to a 6-2 win over Los Altos in the other semifinal.
