Despite finishing seventh in the WCAL, Mitty caught fire in the postseason, capturing the CCS Division 2 title Friday night with a 5-2 win over Palma at Excite Ballpark in San Jose. Senior Felix Chang went 3-for-3 with a triple, home run and two runs scored to back the pitching of junior Gabe Lopez, who worked six innings for the win. Senior Andre Lopez-Monsivais pitched a perfect seventh for the save.
The Monarchs opened the playoffs with a 4-2 win over WCAL rival Sacred Heart Cathedral, a team they lost to in both regular-season matchups. Then in the semifinals, Mitty pummeled PCAL-Gabilan champ Carmel 21-0 as senior Austin Mak led a 16-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs.
Palma, which finished second in the PCAL-Gabilan, reached the final with an 8-3 win over Burlingame in the semifinals. Senior Cesar Mercado went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for the Chieftains, who finished the season 22-8.
Mitty (18-11) is the No. 8 seed in the NorCal Division 2 and will visit Clayton Valley Charter Tuesday.
