Mitty's Tran receives first scholarship offer

April 2, 2016

Archbishop Mitty junior quarterback Phillip Tran has been offered a scholarship by Kentucky Christian University, said his father Nathan by email this afternoon.

The Monarch signal-caller also announced the news via Twitter.

Tran starred at Fremont-Sunnyvale High as a sophomore, leading the Firebirds to a 9-2 record in 2014 while throwing for 2,256 yards and 25 touchdowns with three interceptions.

But after that season Nathan Tran said his son was transferring to Mitty where two of Trans cousins had attended, adding the decision was not based on athletics.

"We've always wanted for our kids to go to a private school," Nathan told Prep2Prep at the time. “He (has) two cousins that just recently graduated from Mitty so it has always been something we wanted to do. “Financially, that was not possible until now."

But surprisingly Tran did not start at Mitty of the powerful WCAL as Sam Serra came out for the team as a senior after concentrating only on basketball as a junior. Serra starred for the Monarchs (6-5 overall, 3-4 WCAL) during the pre-season and early part of the league season, though injuries later in the year allowed Tran to start some games and throw for 552 yards on 41-of-88 passing with three touchdown passes and one interception.
