Calabasas hails atop the Division 5 playoffs, and for good reason. Quarterback Tristan Gebbia already cemented his place in the record books and it seems nothing is getting in the way of the Coyotes. But the postseason produces unexpected results, and the other 15 teams will be out to prove that right. Calabasas opens the playoffs with a matchup against Harvard-Westlake, and at the opposite end, Capistrano Valley faces Santa Ana Foothill. Ventura will host Moorpark, and Bishop Diego faces Salesian in what should be an entertaining contest. Paloma Valley will battle King, while top Desert Valley selection La Quinta will play at-large bid Redlands. In a battle of No. 2 selections, 9-1 San Jacinto will face Roosevelt, while St. Joseph will host Troy.
Players to Watch:
Calabasas: QB Tristan Gebbia, WR Darnay Holmes, WR Keyshawn Johnson Jr.
Harvard-Westlake: QB Jameson Wang, RB Thomas Glover, WR Zac Harleston
St. Joseph: RB CJ Cole, WR Nate Guzman, LB Fenton Will
Troy: RB Skyler Taylor, RB Cole Thomas, DB Austin Leocadio
Roosevelt: QB Jeremy Moussa, WR Erik Brooks, WR Chase Williams
San Jacinto: QB Isiah Bolding, WR Garrett Geboy, RB Eddie Guerrero
La Quinta: RB Benji Cordova, RB Justin Anderson, RB Derrick Kennedy
Redlands: QB Steven Garcia, RB Doug Haugh, WR Adam McLeod
Paloma Valley: QB Chance Nolan, RB Corey Maddox, WR Blake Moore
King: QB Bradley Kleven, RB Cardell Walder, WR Jarrod Favors
Bishop Diego: RB John Harris, RB Mark Soracco, WR Evan McKeegan
Salesian: QB Robbie Blosser, RB Deommodore Lenoir, WR Ajani Johnson
Ventura: QB Jack Gutierrez, RB Broc Mortensen, WR Joey Thompson
Moorpark: RB Jeremy Harris, QB William Westerling, WR/DB Zane Pope
Capistrano Valley: QB Kevin Brown, WR Riley Kasper, WR Michael Dyer
Foothill: QB Bobby Garci, RB Dante Swayne, WR David Lopez
Sleeper team: Roosevelt lost just twice in the regular season, with their second defeat coming against the powerful Corona Centennial. Outside of that and a Week 1 loss, it has been the Mustangs’ season, with wins coming by wide and the smallest of margins. Roosevelt has proven it has the chops no matter the situation, and will get to put that to the test starting with the first round of the playoffs. A semifinal matchup with Calabasas would be entertaining to say the least.
Predicted title outcome: Calabasas over Paloma Valley
